It would be justified to call Les Filles a hidden gem: From the outside, only a sign in the kitchen window lets you know that you have found it; there is no menu on display and the dining area itself is not visible from the outside, as it is on the first floor. Oh, and you can’t just walk in, either: you have to ring the doorbell and wait to be buzzed in.
So it’s quite possible that you have walked by at Rue du Vieux Marché aux Grains 46, just around the corner from the Halles St. Gery on one side and Place St. Catherine on the other, without noticing that there was restaurant inside.
You can go for lunch or dinner here, but the real treat is the brunch on weekends.
On the all-you-can-eat buffet you will find a wide range of bread and brioche along with different kinds of jams; a selection of ham and cheese; a choice of brownies or cake; salad, vegetables … and, usually starting at around 12, a soup of the day and at least one hot dish, i.e. fantastic meatloaf, sausages, roasted chicken.
All that is included in the price of 18 € per person, while you have to pay separately for drinks. (Unfortunately they have stopped serving free filtered water.)
The brunch runs from 10 pm to 4 pm on both Saturdays and Sundays, so you can stay for quite a while. (Believe us: At some stage you will be full!) Since the place fills up quickly at noon, it is adviseable to come rather soon (= before 10;30) or wait until the middle of the afternoon. Luckily they have recently started taking reservations.
There are only big “community” tables for ~15 people each, so you will be sharing your table with other people, which is fine, as long as you are a) lucky to find a spot at the end of the table or b) come as a bigger group. Being squeezed in the middle of the table as a couple between two big groups is not so great …
Altogether it is one of the best brunchs we have come across in Brussels so far – The food is great and fresh. Sometimes, on busy days. it gets a bit chaotic, though. So don’t come here if you are looking for peace and quiet.
The service is reasonable. On hectic days the girls can get a bit stressed, depending on how many people are coming and going. So far we have always left this place full and happy.
